F-Gas Regulation: What will change for industrial chillers from 2027.
With the F-Gas Regulation (EU) 2024/573 coming into force, the requirements regarding the global warming potential (GWP) of refrigerants will be further tightened. From 1 January 2027, new GWP limits will apply to industrial refrigeration systems and chillers, and these must be taken into account when planning new installations.
An overview of the new limits.
The following requirements will apply to new chillers placed on the market from 2027:
- Up to 12 kW cooling capacity: GWP ≤ 150
- Over 12 kW cooling capacity: GWP ≤ 750
The aim of these requirements is to promote the use of more climate-friendly refrigerants and to further reduce the environmental impact of fluorinated greenhouse gases.
Greater planning certainty for investments.
For operators of industrial cooling systems, the regulation means one thing above all: choosing the right technology is increasingly becoming an integral part of a long-term investment strategy. In doing so, regulatory requirements must be taken into account alongside energy efficiency and performance.
Existing systems are not directly affected by the new placing-on-the-market rules and can generally continue to be operated. The decisive factors are the respective service, operational and local requirements.
